Me: Am I a bad teacher?
Mrs. Lawson: What do you mean?
Me: It just kind of felt like today they didn’t care.
Mrs. Lawson: They liked it, it’s just a lot to ask them to sit and think.
Me: Is that…not what school is?
Mrs. Lawson: Isn’t that what your project is about? School not being just sitting?
Me: I guess so. I just don’t know any other way to make sure they’re getting reading comprehension skills other than them…reading…and comprehending…
Mrs. Lawson: It takes practice. For them, and for you.
Me: I have a STEM project for tomorrow.
Mrs. Lawson: See! That’s not just sitting and thinking.
Me: I guess so. But the reading and comprehending and making arguments. I’ve got to figure that out. I thought maybe, because of Percy Jackson, they might want to read about the gods, write about their personalities, you know?
Mom: Give it time. You’ll figure it out. You always do. Just listen to them! You have the luxury of support on your side. What do they tell you they want to learn about? Take whatever they say, figure out how to make it a lesson. You’ll be just fine.
